The staff and board members of Save Our Sisters Women’s Resource Center, are all members
of The National Organization for Women, (NOW) Jonesboro, GA Chapter. Within NOW we advocated and addressed national and global
women’s issues. However, in working through NOW we saw an unmet need to work with the community on a more intimate level.
Working with individuals within our community we were presented with the same basic issues, (domestic violence, child custody,
child support, lack of community education) and saw disparities in services offered on the local level. In addition, when
seeking help for individuals and victims we also took note that there was no central place that gathered these resources and
could help navigate the system of resources. We began to collect these resources and take note of the resources that were
not viable. We started a database of resources and felt the need to stay with these individuals who sought help until the
entire issue was resolved, as opposed to referring and passing the person off to the next organization. We felt a duty to
advocate and give individual support to these individuals throughout the entire process.
After receiving the assistance they needed these individuals felt the need to give back to
the next person, knowing that the next individual would benefit from their experiences. We have continued this process over
and over, until finally in February of 2008 we decided to make it official and incorporate our agency, which yielded Save
Our Sisters Women’s Resource Center, Inc. An organization of women helping other women with the issues that affect them
within our community. We are devoted to helping navigate local, state and federal resources, while simultaneously educating
and supporting our community. We continue to help the women of our community and have partnered and formed coalitions with
the Clayton County Solicitor’s Office, Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Clayton County Police Department, and
the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office.
